Light Therapy

Do you notice that it’s harder to get up in the winter then the summer? Do you find in the winter you have less energy, are hungrier and moodier than in the summer months? Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD has got much more attention in recent years and is a disorder that affects many people, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. This article will look at why the winter can cause these problems and what you can do about it. Inside each of our cells we have a mini organ known as the mitochondria. Some cells will have just one mitochondria while others will have thousands. The … [Read more...]

The Right Exercise For You

For a lot of people the motto of no pain, no gain is synonymous with exercise. If they aren’t covered in sweat and feeling like they are about to collapse they feel they haven’t worked out hard enough. This is also common with people who are just starting to train. They go from no exercise in years to training three, four or five times a week, when they can barely walk up a flight of stairs they think have got the training intensity just right. People exercise for a variety of reasons, but if we are looking at it from a physiological perspective, exercise is about adaptation. Through … [Read more...]

Case Study Part 2: My Girlfriend

This is part 2 of the article. To read part 1 PLEASE CLICK HERE. I have a strict policy of not treating family and friends. I don’t think it works and in the interest of not ruining relationships I have always done so since I started practicing. If friends or family ever ask, I always recommend Josh and Jeanne Rubin from EastWest Healing. I have studied with them before and think their understanding of physiology is amazing. Unlike a lot of bloggers who know physiology, these guys are actually practitioners. They don’t just know things in theory, they also know how to put it into … [Read more...]

Guest Blog Posts

While the articles on my own website have been a little slow lately, I have been writing for other sites. Below are a collection of articles I have written in the last month or so that are definitely worth a read (even if I do say so myself). This is an article I wrote on body temperature, pulse and exercise. I find that there is a tendency for people to push themselves too hard when they exercise. The point of exercise is to ask your body to make adaptions based on the type of exercise you are doing. But for lots of people they aren’t able to repair and recover and so exercise just becomes … [Read more...]

Calorie Counting

I used to be very anti-calories. The idea of calorie counting went against everything I believed in to do with food; it was something dieters did and my disdain for calorie counting was on par with dieting. Over the last couple of months I have started to change my opinion and have actually found the process to be really useful with clients. But before you get worried let me explain how I am using calories, as it is basically the opposite of most peoples approach. I have always been a big fan of getting people to eat to satiety and using their hunger to guide how much they consume. I never … [Read more...]

Low Sex Drive

In my practice I seem to get clusters of conditions. One week it will seem that every new patient has been diagnosed with IBS, another week it will all be about weight loss, the following week it will be high cholesterol and so on. Recently I have seen a number of people with low sex drive. While this isn’t the main condition or symptom they have come in with, it is normally something they are also dealing with. It would of course be one thing if all of these people were in there 60s or 70s and had been married to the same person for 50 odd years. The spark’s not what it was used to be; I … [Read more...]

Thyroid Function

While people are now living longer, chronic disease has become more of a problem. While some would put the prevalence of chronic disease down to our longevity I am not so sure. People seem to be suffering from chronic issues at a younger age. Drugs may be keeping us alive longer but this doesn’t necessarily mean that we are healthier. One of the theories for why we are seeing more chronic disease is to do with the thyroid. The thyroid is a gland that’s is located in the neck around the region of the Adam’s apple. It is part of your endocrine system. This is the system in your body that … [Read more...]
